Christmas Crack
From Carrie Morey's Hot Little Suppers cookbook
Ingredients
- 2-3 bags of Sea Salt Biscuit Crackers
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 pomegranate, seeded
- 1 cup pecans, toasted and chopped
Growing up in the South, Christmas Crack was a staple in my house every holiday season. That salty-sweet crunch was irresistible, and once you started snacking, it was almost impossible to stop. It was one of those treats that vanished from the kitchen counter faster than anything else we made.
This year, I wanted to put my own spin on the classic by adding a bright, festive twist — pomegranate. The juicy pop of the seeds brings a burst of freshness that balances the rich toffee and chocolate beautifully. And the best part? Christmas Crack is fully customizable, so you can mix and match toppings to fit any flavor mood. Think nuts, crushed cookies, sprinkles, or whatever your holiday heart loves. This version just might become your new favorite.
Instructions:
-
Preheat the oven to 400ºF.
-
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place crackers in a single layer to cover the surface area of the baking sheet.
-
In a small saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar together over medium heat. Continuously whisk and bring the mixture to a boil; let boil for a few minutes before removing from the heat.
-
Pour the brown sugar mixture over the crackers in as even a layer as possible. Use a rubber spatula to spread if necessary. Then bake the crackers + brown sugar for 5 minutes in the oven.
-
Remove the crackers from the oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips over the warm, caramelized crackers. Allow to sit for a few minutes to melt the chocolate, then use a spatula to spread evenly over the crackers.
-
While the chocolate is melted, sprinkle the pomegranate seeds and pecans over the top. (Optionally, swap the toppings for some of your favorite festive flavors or edible decorations!)
-
To set everything, place the baking sheet in the freezer for about 20 to 30 minutes. Remove from the freezer and take the parchment off of the baking sheet; carefully break into pieces and peel away the parchment paper from your Christmas Crack. Enjoy!
